In 1887 Van Gogh produced ‘Fishing in Spring. Pont de Clichy', a testament to his relationship with fellow Impressionist artist Paul Signac. Under his influence, Van Gogh's palette brightened and his brushstrokes became more varied. The setting of this work is the Seine River at the Pont de Clichy, near Asnières, where Van Gogh and Signac painted together on several occasions.
